Get to know the dashboard

The WordPress admin dashboard, often called WP Admin or WP admin panel, is essentially the control panel for your entire WordPress website.

The admin bar is a convenient toolbar that appears at the top of your website when you’re logged in as an admini. It provides quick access to essential functions, such as adding new posts or pages, directly while you browse your website.

Get to know the customizer

The Customizer tool focuses specifically on your website’s global appearance settings. It allows you to modify your menu, global ads, widgets, and other visual elements. With the Customizer, you can preview changes in real-time before applying them, ensuring you can fine-tune your site’s look to perfection.

Get to know the block settings

Each block comes with standard configuration settings (spacing, colors, styles) and its own unique settings. Access the Block Menu by clicking three dots after selecting the block, and advanced settings by clicking on Settings in the upper right

Create a page: Help Video

  • Title it your name
  • Hide page title by clicking on the black Genesis planet (upper right) and checking “Hide Title”
  • Publish (upper right)
    • You can adjust page status (draft, preview, private, password, public) in page settings (upper right)

Now you can create blocks on your page

  • From Scratch
    • Create a header block: Help Video
      • Type /header or find it in the block library (upper left)
      • Add your department
      • In the block settings menu, make it left aligned and change it to an H3 so it’s not confused as the page title
        • Bonus: Trying changing Letter case to ALL CAPS under Typography in Advanced Block Settings
  • Steal and Borrow
    • Navigate to the example page here
    • Select Edit Page from black admin bar
    • Open the document finder (upper left)
    • Select “Media + Text” block
    • Click the three dots to open the block settings menu and “Copy Block”
    • On your page, paste the block by typing “ctrl” + “v” in a paragraph block
  • Layout Quick-add
    • Click Layouts (upper right)
    • In the Sections tab, scroll and select a band that strikes your fancy
    • Click to add to your page
    • Click individual blocks to update
  • Preview your work (upper right)
  • See what’s published, not drafted (upper right)
  • Reorder by clicking and dragging in the document finder or by clicking the six dots in the block settings menu

Add your page to the Menu: Help Video

  • Dashboard–> Appearance–> Menus–> Choose which menu to edit from the dropdown and click “Select” 
  • This is where you will update your menu, your secondary menu, and your footer 
  • Different from Sitebuilder: Pages don’t automatically get added to menus 

OR

  • Customizer–> Menus–> Header Menu–> + Add Items
  • Drag and drop to swap order and nesting
